Powered by the new Apple H1 earphone chip, AirPods use optical sensors and motion accelerometers to detect whether they're in your ear or not. The H1 chip automatically routes audio and engages the microphone, whether one or both AirPods are plugged in. An additional accelerometer works with beamforming microphones to filter out external noise and focus on your voice during a call or while you're talking to Siri.
